Here is a recent post from AMidwesternDoctor on sleep. He doesn't include blood-sugar swings which I think is an underappreciated issue, but a lot of good info here...

Interesting read, he has some good insights. I used to buy GHB at the health food store. I REALLY miss it being available.

Wow! Lots of great stuff here, thanks for sharing. My problem is going back to sleep after the 230am wakeup. I'm pretty careful with alcohol, eat nothing after dinner, very little sugar in my diet, I exercise regularly, but nothing seems to help me sleep. I will try some of the things mentioned that I've never heard of - mag oil, melatonin gummies, magnesium glycinate, plus 50 mg pregnenolone, etc.

I have the same problem. I can only sleep for 4-5 hours, then I'm wide awake.
Recently, what has worked very well for me is drinking chamomile tea with 2 heaped teaspoons of glycine powder as soon as I wake up. Then go straight back to bed. Don't turn on any devices. Normally within 30 min I'm back to solid sleep.
Previously what also worked was drinking bone broth and eating Gouda cheese. This works well if I wake up hungry. If you're not hungry when you wake up, try the chamomile tea with glycine powder.

Thanks! You might have something here. I'm going to do some research. I do hear the cortisol vibrating in my ears some nights and it always mystifies me. I've tried almost every pill and supplement known to man and nothing really works.

If you mean you hear your pulse in your ears when you are in bed, that is most probably intestinal inflammation. You can't sleep with thumping in your ears. The temporary solution is to pull off your pillow so your neck doesn't press on it and you don't hear the pulsations. If you have that, you should investigate why your digestive tract gets inflamed and avoid foods that inflame it further.

Please share which sleep supplements work best for you.
Here are a couple of non supplement ideas that I have tried recently. If by chance you watch TV in bed or even just before bed in another room, try a good pair of those blue light blocking glasses. I watch tv in bed but when I put those glasses on, I swear I start getting drowsy in about 20 minutes or so. It makes the TV a little harder to watch but for me it helps. I am also trying to read more. I never read books, but for the hell of it I bought a kindle book reader and find that I can also start to nod off by reading on the kindle. I still take some supplements, but I think there is something to one or both of these

I am 78 years old and in good health, a regular gym rat, slim and trim, still working full time as a dentist. My sleep issues started soon after 60 with difficulty going back to sleep after arising in the wee hours to pee. Over the years I've tried various herbal and melatonin combinations, diphenhydramine, also CBD in various forms and combinations. The results were variable and short lived.

For your consideration I will offer the combination I have used for the last three years with consistent success. The first is a 10 mg THC Indica capsule. Medical marijuana is legal in Florida. I am not a smoker so I prefer the capsules. The second is an over-the-counter product called Sleep 3, a 10 mg melatonin time release form combined with some of the well known herbal sleep aids. The third is Magtein, a magnesium L-threonate product, the fourth is doxylamine, commonly available as Unisom (I take half a pill).

I take one of each with water 20 minutes before bedtime. When I wake up to pee I feel quite groggy but back in bed I am asleep immediately. At 6:30 I am up with the alarm and after a few splashes of hot water in the face I am alert and good to go, no hangover for me. Coffee and a protein breakfast and I can take on the day, all day.

Of course we are all different and how your body processes various substances may be individual. I am simply sharing what has made a big difference in my sleep experience.

I also like to take nightcap 10 mg THC Indica. I do not take it daily. If I do my body gets used to it. So I'll take 3 times a week. It works great for me.

Thanks for sharing. That's quite an interesting protocol and can't imagine how you pieced them all together like that. But this is the kind of real-world feedback I'm looking for, really appreciate it.

Best relaxing initial sleep I get is with 5mg hydrocodone and 5mg Valium. Unfortunately, not something MDs feel comfortable prescribing. Some of the best sleep with the most refreshed feeling I've had has been following some surgeries. I almost look forward to them! Can't beat pharmaceutical, properly dosed fentanyl or propofol.

I cut my leg recently (wasn’t too bad but needed surgery) and they gave me 10 oxycodone. When I tell you that was my absolute best week of sleep, I mean it. I’ve had surgery 5 times in my life and everytime I’m reminded why we have an opioid epidemic. This isn’t to say you should use highly addictive drugs to fall asleep, I’m just saying you have a point

Melatonin has never worked for me. Ambien and xanax work great, but I hate to use them regularly. I've found low dose of edible THC (or THC with CBC) works great. They take about 2 hours to kick in, so I eat one between 9-10:30PM. That gets me through that dreaded 2:30AM wake-up, and I have no side effects in the morning. Xanax leaves me groggy in the morning and ambien doesn't work long enough to get me through the night (but I only take half a 10mg pill).
