Understanding weight loss

This may be the most dumb question ever. How come guys in prison are really buff and lean when they lack protein or do not consume as much protein? Plus I am sure they are on a calorie deficit since they have scheduled meals and I am sure do not eat as much.
I seen a lot of guys come out of prison in awesome shape and a year later they're totally out of shape. I guess when you have a lot of time on your hands, you can use that time as you wish.

Ok so i just measured my chest, arms, waist and its still the same as over a year ago. The shirts fit better but the weight hasn't decreased I understand about the body composition but if I'm changing shouldn't the measurements be less or more vs stay the same?

Are you working out and if so how hard are you working out? Some people go to the gym and just kinda dick around, play with their smart phone, and never really get any sort of real workout. Others think they can get on TRT and they will magically generate muscle without having to pay the price for it.

I am working out but from home. I have a bench and leg extensions and dumbbells. I do push ups too. I normally do 4-5 sets with 15 reps 100 lbs benching and 40 arms, curl etc plus Bowflex Max Trainer for cardio.

IF your shirts fit differently, either the shirts have changed or you have....

It can only be one or the other.
When I weighed 163 some button up shirts did not fit at all. Now I weigh 170 and those same shirts fit really well. My overthinking or confusion is why do I measure the same then and now yet the shirts fit now with more weight?
If its body composition shouldn't the the scale remain the same only if I've gained muscle and lost fat and/or the scale drop if I've lost weight and not gained any muscle?

Your clothes are just another version of the scale. IF your shirt fits differently OBVIOUSLY your body comp has changed.

Who cares what the scale sys? You're overthinking it.

Yeah the shirts fitting is a PLUS. Let me ask you something. Is there such thing as lifting weights while not having much if any muscle growth and yet composition changes?

Fat takes up more space than fat. I refer back to the picture madman posted earlier in the thread. So you lose fat which takes up more space and shirts fit better even though you have built muscle. You are actually leaner with more muscle but maybe smaller. If you continue to work out you will increase the size of your muscle and your measurements should get larger if you are working out properly.

I mentioned earlier, I have lost 22.8 lbs of body fat, increased muscle mass 18.9 lbs, and increased bone mass 1.1 lbs. The net result is only a loss of 2.8 lbs but with the changes in body composition I lost 3 inches in my waist. I took measurements of by various body parts and each of them have made some nice improvements but it did not happen overnight. Work out hard, be patient, but don't obsess with it. Don't get hung up on the weight, instead focus on how you look.

My first thought is that you are a little off on your measurements. A 1/2 inch difference would do it.

My second thought is this:

Cotton will stretch as the shirt is worn over time, especially if the cotton is loosely woven. It will stretch even more if the quality of the cotton is poor. And, of course, when a shirt says preshrunk, that may mean that the fibers were shrunk, but not necessarily the woven fabric or the completed shirt.

As a rule of thumb, weight loss is generally 75 percent diet and 25 percent exercise.

When I have lost weight, it was pretty obvious. When I do get stronger, I can lift heavier weights.

I have seen people lose a lot of weight just working out at home, using insanity / zumba type workouts and doing a lot of walking, watching their diet. Weightlifting alone isn't really focused on weight loss, but if you do HIIT type weight lifting, you get both muscle and cardio together.

ANd if you need DEXA scans, calibers, maybe electron microscopes? to determine if you have lost weight, maybe you haven't lost much weight?

I guess it depends first on your workout routine. Sure if you don't push yourself your muscles adapt and find a new normal. And various routines are designed to either increase size, endurance or strength. To a degree, you can't really totally isolate each of those factors.

You have a layer of fat covering your entire body, so it's kind of hard to really see / measure muscle growth if you have a high body fat percentage.

I tend to always try and lift heavier and vary my routine. I know how many weight plates / free weights is my 1 rep max, so I try to increase this over time. Sometimes I cut my 1 rep max in half and try and lift 20+ reps. I like to warm up with ~65% of my 1 lift max. My informal goal is to max out the weight plates on nautilus type machines. A few machines I can do that already, most I cannot. Riding a bike, I know how many miles I can cover on the same route in an hour, I know how many hours I can ride before exhausted. My time for 12 miles doesn't really vary all that much, maybe +/- 8 min total, that is from my front door back again, including traffic lights, residential streets, and a 9 mile bike path.

So it's fairly easy for me to determine if I am making progress, staying the same or if I haven't had enough rest. Like if I lift weights the same muscle two days in a row, I can't lift as heavy the next day. Even if I "feel" good, I still can't do the same 1 lift max. Often I need two rest days between the same muscle group.

Yes. With certain types of resistance/ weight training you can increase strength (Density) without increasing muscle size.

It's not the shirts that stretched for sure because when it originaly did not fit it sat in the closet for a long time and after that I tried it on before washing it and it fits now.

Today I tried a shirt that wouldn't fit at 160 lbs but fits when I was 168. Now I'm 174 and fits a little tighter around the waist.
How does this make sense? If the shirt didn't fit at 160 and fits at 168. Why would it be tighter around 174?

I really think you are obsessing over this a little bit...at 160 maybe you were skinny fat and the shirt did not fit. at 168 maybe you lost some fat and put on some lean muscle mass so the shirt then fit. Now at 174 you are bigger and it would make sense that the shirt fits tighter. Concentrate on how you look and feel and not what your weight is.

I apologize for the repeditiveness. I'm just trying to understand here more on the inches aspect. Yes the scale can go up while you gain muscle and yes clothes can fit better even weighing more but.. How does inches work? My waist is still the same. Is it possible to still have the same waist size and still lost weight or should I say better composition with SAME waist size?
I ask because you always hear people mention they lost 5 inches of the waist or however many. In my case I haven't. Clothes fit a little better, scale went up and same waist size.

If you are actually losing fat, your waist size should go down providing you are above 15% bf.

If one has a higher body fat % before losing weight as in >15% than as you lose adipose you will notice a reduction in overall fat loss including the waist.

As one becomes leaner overall fat loss will be noticeable but loss of adipose in the abdominal region especially (lower abdominals/obliques/lower back) will be the last to go as fat loss in this area is more stubborn when one becomes sub 10% BF.

Also water bloat as in water retention--->excess e2 or poor diet can result in the waist appearing bigger even when one is losing BF.

Aside from having healthy testosterone levels.....ones diet and of course GENETICS will have the biggest impact on the leanness one can achieve!
