Among healthy people, regular use of fish oil was found to make them more susceptible to developing heart disease and stroke for the first time, the study found.

Among those who had existing heart disease, however, fish oil consumption was shown to slow the progression of cardiovascular disease and reduce the risk of mortality.

The first "study" is observational, so it cannot make claims of cause and effect. Of course they ignore that. All it shows is that people that take fish oil for medical reasons have a higher probability to suffer from what they are trying to avoid by taking fish oil. A possible explanation: someone that takes fish oil and thinks it "protects" them while keeping eating junk food and not exercising.
 
From my understanding, most fish oil supplements contain fish oil that has oxidized, and become rancid, by the time it gets to consumers. So that’s one reason that it’s probably not a good idea to consume most fish oil on the market

Another reason to not consume fish oil is due to PUFA’s possibly not being great to consume in high amounts, including omega 3’s. I know it goes against what pretty much all of us grew up hearing, but I’ve done quite a bit of research on the subject, and I personally would never take a fish oil supplement again. Unless I learn something going forward that changes my mind on fish oil supplements, and PUFA’s in general. Another member here talked about the subject pretty in depth. I’ll paste a little bit of what he said on the subject. I’ll also link the thread where he talked about fish oil supplements

-I think you know where I stand on this. Yes, IMO avoid all fish oil supplements. But not all seafood. Shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, oysters, squid, mussels and other shellfish are low PUFA. They are fine. I do believe cold-weather fatty fish (high in Omega 3s) should be avoided. Cod is a leaner fish and supposedly lower in Omega 3. Warmer weather fish are lower in PUFA. So salmon and herring are out. But I do understand some species have different levels of PUFA, such as sardines. So one would need to be careful. Same with tuna. Some have more fat that others. Unfortunately, our nutrition paradigm doesn't really track for excluding higher Omega-3 fish. We've been convinced to seek out such foods.

While research shows that people who eat dietary sources of fish oil at least twice a week have a lower risk of dying of heart disease, taking fish oil supplements seems to have little to no benefits to heart heart health

 
@Vince The physicallly and mentally healthiest people I know have never used any nutrition supplements. They have done nothing special, are rather workaholics.
I believe that we cannot 'outsmart' genetics by general supplements. We should have a gene analysis for know enzyme mutations and supplement based on that knowledge, e.g. methylated B vitamins. Such screening 'should' be part of a health care system.
People that feel subpar are susceptible to supplement marketing.

Yup, I can relate. When I was training back in the day close to 20 years ago at my hometown gym, the owner of the gym, took his 90+ yo mother to see the doc. So once they came back, he said that doc said this- since you are feeling good and doing great, the main thing for you is to keep on smoking and never give up lol

Fwiw I'm also an ex chain smoker for close to 3 decades and know one thing. Whenever I tried quitting its exactly then when I have started getting lots of different issues to come out. So I relapsed and all them issues went away. Did that too many times and noticed exactly same pattern.
 
Put simply, what you eat won't change the sequence of your DNA, but your diet has a profound effect on how you “express” the possibilities encoded in your DNA. The foods you consume can turn on or off certain genetic markers which play a major – and even life or death – role in your health outcomes.

For me in retrospect all the years of chasing nutritional supplements was a huge waste of money and time.
