Enlarged Liver

Hey guys, feeling good, liver enzymes are well within normal LabCorp range and no different today than 5 years ago when I started TRT. However a minor discomfort in the right side of my abdomen (about 1 year ago), found gallstones in the neck of my gallbladder. I have no pain and slight discomfort only if I eat the wrong thing. My bigger concern is on a recent follow-up ultrasound they discovered that I have an enlarged liver. Evidently an enlarged liver is different than a fatty liver. Any idea what impact injecting cypionate over 5 years can have on a liver. And more specifically, maybe causing it to be enlarged.

An enlarged liver is a sign of an underlying problem, liver disease, excessive alcohol consumption, congestive heart failure or cancer. You need to find the cause of the condition.

That's what Ive read, but I haven't had alcohol in 20 years, and had a fairly recent PET scan when Oncology released me for being cancer free for 5 years. Never had heart problems, and blood work looking for infection in the body always comes back clean. I'm stumped right now. I've got an appointment with a liver specialist April 2nd.

How enlarged?
What does your doctor think is the cause?
did the scan also show fatty liver?
Any large cysts in the liver?
What is your history of alochol use?
TRT can cause slight growth of the liver. This has been seen in one study

I thought TRT would have no effect on the liver since you are not taking the testosterone orally?
No effect as far as liver stress. However, it is a growth agent. It grows tissues. A study of TRT patients showed that since applying TRT levels of testosterone, their livers grew slightly larger. As did mine. However, this seems physiological not pathalogical

Had several ultrasounds because of gallstones so they've got several measurements of my liver and it is what they called slightly larger. Doc does not know so I have an appointment with a specialist soon. Did not say anything about fatty liver. Haven't had alcohol jn 20 years. I like the idea that it may not cause stress (enzymes normal) but since testosterone is a growth agent, it may cause slight enlargement.

James, I'm a medical Sonographer. Probably the most experience and recognized ultrasound guy in the country as I teach a nationally recognized abdominal ultrasound course. If your liver enzymes are good I would ignore the ultrasound. Time and time again I see Sonographers over-estimating liver size. By the way, 15.5 cm is considered the normal longitudinal liver dimension. Although, with larger men, that number will naturally be bigger. The bottom line is liver enzymes tell the true story.

On the basis of my own (yes, anecdotal) experience, I’d echo what Bernie wrote. Six years ago I was told an ultrasound revealed an enlarged liver. Like you, the enzymes were in a solid place and had no other issues. That’s the same story today.

I was told not to worry and I (largely) haven’t.

All the best.

Bernie - If you're teaching a nationally recognized ultrasound course, you know your stuff. Last blood work was about a month ago. Enzymes normal per LabCorp, and consistent with what I typically see. Makes sene that the measurement would possibly be subject to Sonographers error.

CoastWatcher - Have enzymes checked regularly as part of my TRT blood work (5 years on TRT). Enzymes are about the same now as when I started. Was that your 1st ultrasound? Did you have any previous ultrasounds that showed a normal size liver? I've had several over the last couple years due to gallstones, but this is the first one to suggest an enlarged liver.
