Vitamin D Dosage - How Much is Too Much?

I have taken Vitamin D3 at 2000 units for years. I recently had my plantar fasciitis flare up to a point that I could hardly walk. In researching possible remedies, I came across a YouTube video from an orthopedic doctor who recommends taking 10,000 units to help with inflammation.

Like everything else, the topic is rife with counter opinions. 10,000 units seems very excessive to me, but other people swear by it. Thoughts?

Vitamin D toxicity: How does it happen?

Vitamin D toxicity occurs when vitamin D levels in your body are so high that they cause harm.

Healthcare professionals may also call it hypervitaminosis D.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. In contrast to water-soluble vitamins, your body has no easy way to get rid of fat-soluble vitamins.

For this reason, excessive amounts may build up in your body.

The exact mechanism behind vitamin D toxicity is complicated and isn’t fully understood at this point.

However, we know that the active form of vitamin D functions similarly to a steroid hormone.

It travels inside cells, telling them to turn genes on or off.

Usually, most of your body’s vitamin D is in storage, bound to either vitamin D receptors or carrier proteins. Very little “free” vitamin D is available (1Trusted Source, 2Trusted Source).

However, when vitamin D intake is extremely high, your levels can become so high that there isn’t any room left on the receptors or carrier proteins.

This may lead to elevated levels of “free” vitamin D in your body, which may travel inside cells and overwhelm the signaling processes affected by vitamin D.

One of the main signaling processes has to do with increasing the absorption of calcium from your digestive system and bones (3).

As a result, the main sign of vitamin D toxicity is hypercalcemia, or elevated calcium levels in your blood (4Trusted Source, 5Trusted Source).

High calcium levels can cause various symptoms. The calcium can bind to other tissues, including your kidneys, and damage them.

I've done 400.000 loading phase 50.000/day for 8 days. As it takes time till it saturates and peaks. Also watched a dude in Thailand doing 100.000/day, insulin, growth, T, smoking weed, etc lol Was still alive a month or two ago as I've deactivated my IG lol

A few thoughts: Even small amounts if taken without the correct co-factors (K2, A and E) especially K2 could be "too much" but the problem is the lack of K2. An amount that puts your blood levels between 50-80 seems to be the optimal range from what I remember. When I'm not getting much sun, I take 10,000IU 3-4 times per week and that puts my levels right at the bottom of the range around 50. DMSO, BPC patches and the Amish arthritis cream (camphor, menthol, etc.) seemed to help my foot a lot when I had issues which have thankfully all resolved.

As my ferritin drops further, I’m forced to drop my vitamin D dose. I’m down to 1800 IU and at times I feel it’s too much, but ferritin at 78 is preventing me from converting vitamin D to the active form of vitamin D.

Every time I eat something with iron in it, the higher the content of iron, the worse I feel and the more vitamin D I require. On TRT, my body is trying to regulate the iron/hemoglobin by dropping the ferritin. I had been supplementing iron for 3 years preventing my body from reaching a balance.

I suspect I need a ferritin in the 40-50 range.

I do take K2, but I haven't taken any vitamin E for ages. What form and dose would you recommend?

I use DMSO for a lot of purposes. It really helps the absorption of other products. I didn't even consider BPC, I may just have to order some and try it.

I do take K2,
I made the mistake of taking vitamin D without magnesium and vitamin K. I have to take 600 mg magnesium and 125 mcg of vitamin K. I had actually depleted my magnesium working out 7 days per week for the last year.

Then I started taking vitamin D and then a month later magnesium, and improvements didn’t start until 10 days after starting the magnesium supplement. You can’t convert vitamin D to the active form without magnesium.

Your body can’t even absorb vitamin D without magnesium. I take my vitamin D supplement with avocado oil (fats) to help with absorption.
