We share the sadness of the International Society of Andrology and the German Society of Endocrinology (DGE) and the European endocrine community following the recent passing of ESE’s past president (2007-2011) Professor Eberhard (Ebo) Nieschlag.
Born in Bad Godesberg in 1941, Professor Nieschlag has been one of the most important researchers in andrology worldwide, establishing the section of Experimental Endocrinology in Münster, Germany, where he later founded the section of Reproductive Medicine.
His clinical and research activities focused on reproductive endocrinology and andrology, testosterone, treatment of infertility, the aging male and hormonal male contraception.
Professor Nieschlag held numerous management positions in national and international expert committees and associations, giving his time and expertise to further the discipline of endocrinology and our understanding of andrology.
As well as being one of the first Presidents of ESE (from 2007-2011), he was president of many other important societies in our field during his career including President of the German Society of Endocrinology, the International Society of Andrology, the European Academy of Andrology and the German Society of Reproductive Medicine as well as the President of the German Society of Andrology.
His contribution is highlighted by his scientific output (over 700 papers indexed on PubMed and several books on different aspects of andrology and reproductive medicine), as well as by the incredible number of prizes and awards won throughout his career – including a Special Recognition Award and Honorary Membership of ESE in 2015.
His passing is a great loss for the global endocrine community, and we thank him for all he did for ESE over his many years.
