Enanthate shortage . . . and how many doses from your vial?

As most of us know, our beloved Delatestryl has its days numbered. I think production stopped, after 68 years, in April. I started T very recently and I'm due to run out of my first bottle on June 8, and had hoped the pharmacist would save me a bottle. I contacted him today telling him the sad story and he said "No way, you're mistaken". He then looked it up and was shocked to see that it was true and that he only had ONE bottle left at his store, and NONE in their franchise system. And worse was that there is no generic Hikma replacement that he knows of. He won't give me the sole bottle because he's only allowed to disburse it closer to my end supply date. But he said that he could release it if he got a note from my endo. So I phone the endo, of course I don't get him, but I get his trusted assistant. I tell her the sad story and what do you think she says? You guessed it . . . "No way, you're mistaken". Geez . . .

So is anybody aware of this? Is somebody paying attention to this shortage, or will patients just find out about it when they visit the pharmacy for a renewal? Does Health Canada look into replacements? I think I'll phone Hikma on Monday - hopefully they know about it!

As an aside, my pharmacist and I were trying to determine the end date of my existing supply. I contend that there's always some T that's left in the needle and thus wasted. The pharmacist disagrees and says that if, for example, I needed 100mg a week, that the 5ml 1000mg bottle should give me exactly 10 doses. Is that true, are you guys hitting 10 pins right on, or do you fall short of that? Maybe there's a bit extra in the bottle to compensate? Hmmm . . .

I already gave you a heads up here!

Hard to believe the pharmacy would not be aware of the discontinuation as a notice was sent out by Health Canada.

Call around as there may be some pharmacies that already have it in stock.

Many will be out of stock temporarily due to the transition.

If you have no luck for the time being than you would need to ask your endo to switch you over to brand name Depo-Testosterone (TC) or the generic Taro-Testosterone (TC).

You should get ten 100 mg doses from the vial of Delatestryl (TE) as they are overfilled slightly.

There will always be some loss of the medication due to the dead space which is the void space from the end of the plunger when its fully depressed to the tip of the needle.

This can be minimized by using a LDS insulin syringe (fixed needle).

Hey Madman, I know you gave us the heads up on this, thanks again . . . I was more flabbergasted that neither the pharmacist or the endo knew of it. It's a fairly major chain, you think they'd have some of the new stuff in stock if it were available. Having the catalogue shots and reference numbers is a big help, hopefully I can round some up.

Yes hard to believe!

*However, a generic version of the same strength will be available through Hikma Canada Limited. Testosterone Enanthate Injection, 200 mg/mL is now available at the wholesale level. Drug formulary coverage in all provinces and territories is expected to be effective by Spring 2024. Please let us know if you have any questions or difficulty accessing this medication.

If you have your endo write you the prescription you can get the new generic TE through this pharmacy.

yup, sounds like some reshuffling/name change. "Generic" version will still be made by the company but just changing names..

Granger, I'd like that to be the case, after all I figure the makers of Delatestryl know how to make it after almost 7 decades of doing so. What makes you think it's just a name change vs being made by a different company (Hikma)?

No.

Bausch Health Canadian manufacturing facilities located in Laval, Quebec and Steinbach, Manitoba no longer produce Delatestryl (TE) as it was discontinued.

The generic TE filling the void is made by another well known big pharma company Hikma.

March 28, 2024 update:

Health Canada has informed CSEM that Bausch Health has discontinued production of Delatestryl®. For more details, please see the Drug Shortages Canada report.

disregard.. my dyslexia kicked in and i misread and was incorrect. the good news is it probably is very similar! def let us know how generic goes.

I figured it was a paperwork type thing, but i was wrong.

Well I got my endo to allow an advanced pickup on some Delatestryl; my pharmacist made it sound like I got the last one in Ontario . . . and doesn't know anything about the Hikma replacement. Another pharmacist (Costco) told me yesterday that he thinks they have some "in storage". He out and out said I'm mistaken about no more Delatestryl and also doesn't know about a generic replacement. Makes me wonder what's going to happen as patients start running out of enanthate . . .

I already told you where you can order the generic TE from.

Again as I stated in one of my replies many pharmacys will be out of stock temporarily due to the transition.

Yes Madman, your suggestion is where I was headed if my pharmacy didn't work out. I've got a nice supply now, so things should sort themselves out by the time I run dry . . .

ya there is CONSTANT shortages or replacements they(pharmacists) dont know all of them or what the ins and outs are unless they have to deal with it. you make it sound like stupid pharmacist doesnt know about this 1 drug being 'replaced'.

if you want you can just get them the DIN of the generic hikma and bring that to them as will be smoother.

It's a good point Granger, I did in fact give them the Hikma info.

Yes, I suppose it's quite possible that the pharms have so many changes in supply that it's difficult to keep track of things. But then I've never been too sympathetic to anybody who doesn't know what's happening in their field of specialization.

What is so special about Delatestryl? I have been using Cypionate here in the US

There is nothing magical here!

Delatestryl (TE) formulation uses different excipients (preservatives/carrier oil) vs Depo Testosterone (TC).

If you are one of those outliers or what we call hyper responders then you may need to pay attention to the carrier oils/excipients of the particular formulation.
