A recent meta-analysis evaluated the effects of different food groups on all cause morality. The food groups evaluated were whole grains, refined grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, eggs, dairy, fish, red meat, processed meat, and sugar-sweetened beverages. The following groups lowered mortality significantly: whole grains, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and fish. And two groups raised mortality: red meat and processed meat. Optimal intake of the risk decreasing food groups lowered mortality by 56% while intake of the risk increasing groups resulted in a twofold increase in mortality. An extract from the study can be read at the link. Each of the food groups is discussed.
