In a recent study in Lancet Public Health, Sara Seidelmann, MD, and colleagues examined the association between total carbohydrate intake and mortality in over 15,000 adults in four U.S. communities over approximately 25 years. The sites were all participating in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. The authors then went on to meta-analyze the ARIC data combined with data from seven multinational prospective cohort studies, representing a total study population of well over 400,000. In both cases, the authors used robust analytical methods, controlled carefully for an array of relevant variables related to diet and lifestyle practices, and evaluated the sources of calories providing, or displacing, carbohydrate.
