Past observational studies in large groups of people have shown that those with higher HDL levels (above 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women) tend to have fewer heart attacks. And until recently, the general belief was the higher the HDL level the better. However, a recent analysis found that people with very high HDL levels (80 mg/dL or higher) were about as likely to die from heart disease as people with low HDL (30 mg/dL or lower).

Vince, come on brotha. This article is absolutely horrible lol. Ur smarter than this lol. Not being sarcastic. I’ve read ur comments on here for years. U really are smarter than this. But clearly u haven’t really delved too deeply into what actually causes cardiovascular disease. Not trying to put u down or anything. Most people haven’t. But I’m sure ur not far from being able to understand the actual root causes of cardiovascular disease.

But any article that says “clearly we know ldl is the bad cholesterol” has no idea what they’re talking about, and can be disregarded as credible information, just from that

They also talk about multiple drugs being on the market that increase HDL, but have not been able to prevent cardiovascular disease. This is because cholesterol isn’t what causes or prevents cardiovascular disease. Having a high hdl and high ldl can help prevent cardiovascular disease, to a degree, but it’s not the main things that cause or prevent it. The main things that prevent it, are having a very low fasting insulin level, aka being as insulin sensitive as possible, having very low triglyceride levels, having as low levels of chronic inflammation as possible, having consistently healthy blood sugar levels, having healthy vital signs (mainly blood pressure), and having blood that’s a healthy viscosity. Obv there’s more factors, but those are the main ones. Cholesterol levels aren’t a main contributor to cardiovascular disease, however. That’s why u won’t see meds that increase HDL, or decrease LDL, have much of an actual effect on decreasing all cardiovascular risk. They do nothing to adjust the other things that I mentioned, that greatly affect preventing, or having cardiovascular disease

Then it mentions that to prevent cardiovascular disease, to eat mostly plant based. Don’t even get me started on that one lol

And at the end it says that to lower cardiovascular risk, a doctor will likely recommend an LDL of less than 70, if u already have cardiovascular disease, and an LDL less than 100 for everyone else. Again, don’t get me started on this lol. There’s many many benefits to LDL. The last thing u want, if optimal health is ur goal, is to have an ldl less than 100, let alone less than 70! Like I’ve said before, I personally like my LDL close to, or above 200. But usually it comes back right below 200, which is good enough for me

But articles like this are perfect examples of complete misinformation, and confusing people on what is health, and not healthy, in regards to diet, and things like cardiovascular disease. People read things like this, take it as gospel, and spread/ repeat it as such. But no offense to u personally. I know ur clearly just trying to help. I don’t blame u for thinking what’s in this article is actually the truth. I’m sure many many others would think the same

Someone like me who's family has a history of heart disease, should know that very high HDL cholesterol. Is actually bad for you. I have read this many times and I have talked about it a few times on Excel male. Most laugh at the notion that very high HDL cholesterol is actually bad for you. Very high HDL cholesterol is actually contributes to heart disease and strokes.

How High Is Too High? Very high HDL cholesterol levels not only don't protect you more, but they might be harmful. In one study, people who had HDL cholesterol levels above 60 mg/dL were nearly 50% more likely to have a heart attack or die from heart disease than people whose HDL levels were between 41 and 60 mg/dL.Jul 18, 2023

Can Good Cholesterol Be Too High? - WebMD

I’m not doubting that too high of an HDL can have negative consequences. Everything in the body revolves around a balance system. So makes sense that too high or low of anything can cause issues. I’d have to see a much better study than this to conclude that the specific hdl ranges are what u want to keep it in, and that going higher than 60 increased their heart attack/ cardiovascular disease risk by 50%. I can almost guarantee that’s not true. My money is on an HDL needing to be higher than that to cause such issues. But either way, if ur focusing on HDL or LDL, over all other markers I mentioned, to assess cardiovascular risk, ur already shooting urself in the foot, and not focusing on the right things. It’s like a cop focusing on one person stealing something and going out the front door of a store, while 20 other people are clearing the place out and transporting it all out the back door. In order to actually prevent cardiovascular disease, u need to focus on optimizing all those other markers, first and foremost. Those are gonna be the best bang for ur buck. HDL and/ or LDL are not the cause of cardiovascular disease. I can’t stress that enough. And they don’t contribute nearly as much as u think, and as much as make people think.

I know you care about your health very much. I would like you to post a study about higher HDL above 60 is good for heart health.

U know I’m not a big study guy lol, but I’ll try to find one if I have time. Never looked into it, tbh. Always assumed the higher the hdl, the better. So this is definitely intriguing to me. But like I said, makes sense, since everything in the body revolves around a balance system. As of now, I’m gonna assume that too high of an HDL is actually a negative thing, until I can prove otherwise. I mainly now just want to figure out what that cutoff is, where it starts to have detrimental negative effects in the body. It could in fact be around 60. My gut says it’s probably higher, but I could be wrong. Definitely gonna look into this whole subject more if I have the time. Definitely appreciate u bringing it to my attention tho

Beyond Testosterone Book by Nelson Vergel
There is a study that apparently shows that higher is better cited (but unfortunately no link) near the end of this post below, however the post is worth a read for other reasons, the first of which is that the first thought that came to my mind is whether HDL is sometimes a marker for something else. If it is a marker for infectious disease burden then the HDL in itself would not be "bad". Bottom line is that single-variable fallacy is very much in play here and most people don't have to worry about this issue, especially with the tendency for TRT to lower HDL. As he points out, HDL is somewhat linked to genetics, and as such could be a marker for other genetic factors.

Here is the link, but the whole lipid series in this blog is fascinating, especially regarding the importance of cholesterol in immune function.
