4. Conclusions

The present review details the major two influences on the loss of muscle mass and function with age: muscle fiber atrophy and muscle fiber loss. It is reasonably clear that both of these elements play a role in regulating muscle atrophy and dysfunction at the level of whole muscle/ groups. Nevertheless, few if any research groups focus upon both of these facets simultaneously in humans, nor the prospect of them being interrelated processes (denervation leading to atrophy and/or vice-versa). While this presents experimental challenges, only will investigating these processes simultaneously shed light on the mechanisms of human sarcopenia and dysfunction.
