Ross Arena, PhD, Professor and Head of the Department of Physical Therapy, College of Applied Health Sciences, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, reviews his article appearing in the December 2024 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he finds promise in the newly emerging medical treatments to address the obesity crisis in the United States, such as with GLP-1 receptor agonists, however, he emphasizes that such treatments should not be the only approach and that clinicians need to prescribe healthy living habits and exercise in conjunction with medical treatments. Both approaches offer the best potential outcomes for patients.
