NSAIDs Associated With Higher Testosterone Levels

It's well established that opiates, over time, can suppress male androgen levels, leading to hypogonadism. Danish researchers recently examined the question of non-prescription analgesics and the relationship they had to male reproductive function.

  • Nearly 1500 men provided one semen sample, and one blood sample. They completed a questionnaire on their use of non-prescription pain relievers (acetaminophen, NSAIDs, and combination drugs).
  • Adjusting for age, researcher found no association between the use of non-prescription analgesics and semen quality.
  • However, following adjustments for age and time-of-day blood sampling, higher testosterone levels were observed by users of NSAIDs and combination drugs (but not acetaminophen).
