Garcinia Cambogia: Liver injury linked to weight loss supplement mimics acute hepatitis with jaundice

With obesity an ever-growing problem in the U.S., Garcinia cambogia, either alone or with green tea, has been promoted as yet another herbal/dietary supplement (HDS) for weight loss. Sporadic cases of liver failure from use of G. cambogia have been reported, but its role in liver injury has been controversial.

To shed light on the potentially fatal toxicity of this herbal supplement, Victor Navarro, MD, of Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia, and colleagues conducted a case-control study using data from patients in the Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN) from 2004 to 2018. The study was recently published online in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
