Before menopause, women are less likely to develop metabolic diseases than men. This suggests that sex hormones may have a protective role. The hormones estrogen and leptin work together to protect against metabolic problems. Scientists wanted to know how this works on a cellular level. They used mice to study the role of a protein called Cited1 in controlling feeding behavior. They found that Cited1 helps estrogen and leptin signals work together in a certain group of brain cells called Pomc neurons. This helps the brain control how much food the body eats. These findings could help us understand why men and women have different risks for obesity.
