Best Test for Insulin Sensitivity/Resistance?

Greetings,

I was wondering if anyone new of a single test that measured insulin sensitivity? I get my A1C done once a year in Nov. Last year it was 4.9, but I've read that one can have a healthy A1C and still have significant insulin resistance that can effect T levels. I worry that this case for me. I've always have a problem with sugar. Was labeled pre-diabetic a few years ago. Got my diet under control, but I still binge on high sugar foods and then just work out a lot to burn it off.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Taking your fasting glucose every morning for a couple of weeks would be a good start to baseline your levels. There are other tests as well, but I would start there.

I did not reach pre diabetes but I felt like I had insulin resistance and was heading towards diabetes from years of low T levels (one of the main reasons I started trt). The a1c is a good test but it does not always tell the full story on insulin resistance because you can get a great score through a low carb diet/exercise even with insulin resistance. The a1c test is better at showing how well you are managing your diabetes.

To really see if you have insulin resistance you can take a test where they will give you a drink with a high amount of sugar and the test your blood sugar 2 hrs after. I took that test but then figured out that by buying a blood sugar monitor I could just perform it myself at home.

In my case, only 10 days on trt and I believe my insulin resistance is quickly improving, I am eating more carbs and my blood sugar is always 80 to 90 2 hrs after a carb heavy meal.
