So I read about TRT causing sleep apnea, I just did not expect to be snoring after my first injection. I sleep with my partner and she said I was snoring really loud after my first shot. This has now continued for 5 week of me snoring badly. Prior to this I never snored and even asked my partner if I did. The snoring is so bad that right when I'm about to fall asleep I hear myself snore so loud that it jolts me awake.

I did have a home sleep study (twice) before this from my sleep doctor (pulmonologist) and I had no obstructive sleep apnea.

How is it possible that on the first short it caused me to snore? And now I'm snoring like crazy. I thought changes are slow to tissue.

It's testosterone cyponiate 60mg twice a week.

Any idea of what's going on? I didn't change anything except add TRT. I mean there is no way that on the first day it caused changes to my throat.

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can potentially cause snoring by impacting the muscles in the upper airway, causing them to relax excessively during sleep, leading to airway collapse and obstructed breathing, which manifests as snoring; this mechanism is primarily linked to the potential worsening of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in individuals already susceptible to it. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key points about how TRT might cause snoring: [1, 2, 6]
  • Neuromuscular changes: Testosterone may influence the tone of the muscles in the upper airway, leading to decreased muscle activity during sleep, which can cause the airway to collapse more easily, resulting in snoring. [1, 2, 6]
  • Increased metabolic demand: TRT can increase metabolic rate, potentially leading to increased oxygen consumption during sleep, further contributing to airway collapse and snoring. [2, 3, 7]
  • Reduced hypoxic response: Some research suggests that testosterone might affect the body's response to low oxygen levels (hypoxia), potentially reducing the body's ability to adjust breathing during sleep, exacerbating sleep apnea and snoring. [2, 3, 6]
Important considerations: [1, 2, 8]
  • Not everyone on TRT experiences snoring: While TRT can potentially worsen sleep apnea in susceptible individuals, not all men taking testosterone replacement therapy will experience increased snoring. [1, 2, 8]
  • Consult a doctor: If you start TRT and notice increased snoring or other sleep disturbances, it's crucial to consult your doctor to assess your risk factors for sleep apnea and discuss potential adjustments to your treatment plan. [1, 2, 4]
