Prior to starting TRT two weeks ago I lost several pounds over several weeks. I was averaging about 1 pound per week due to eating clean and going to gym a few days per week. The week I started TRT I dialed in the nutrition even further by tracking macros in Fitness Pal and added a couple of additional gyms days doing cardio. My first weigh-in 1 week after starting TRT and I had no weight loss nor no weight gain. I was the same exact weight. I just weighed in after my second week on TRT and I gained 2.2 pounds. I know this is not fat as my nutrition/eating has been very good and consistently working out. I assumed it must be water gain. Is this normal?

Hi johnt, I have put on 8# of water weigh since I started my trt program 7 weeks ago. I am a crumb counter and on an 1800 cal diet.
I have a huge double chin now and I could rest a beer on my bloated stomach. It is discusting and I can't seem to do anything to make it go away.

subing to this thread in hopes of reading about something to try.

If ones estrogen becomes too elevated it can cause water retention which will be an excess of extra cellular water being held between the muscle/skin causing puffiness/bloat but in your case you just started therapy and are lifting weights so more than likely it is your muscle cells storing more glycogen which will increase intracellular water stored in the muscle cell as testosterone will increase the storage of muscle glycogen which is a good thing as increased glycogen storage in the muscle will make them harder/stronger/better pumps and you will have more energy to train intensely. I am 12 weeks into my trt and have gained 16 pounds so far and am bigger/leaner/stronger than pre trt. I also lift heavy and was already eating 500 grams carbs daily pre trt!

Need to look at your estrogen as from your previous labs you posted was it not high?

Thanks for all the responses.
@Vince I have not taken my blood pressure in a week but will do so tomorrow.
@CoastWatcher Not really sure what bloated feels like. I drink a lot of water and have noticed my belly appears larger than usual.
Hopefully it's like Nelson and others have mentioned that it is combination of TRT and working out, just normal process. I am constantly thinking and worrying about excess estrogen. I just have to let process play out for few more weeks then I think I am going to do a E2 blood test just for piece of mind.

Yes my E2 is very high 62.8 (RR 7.6 - 42.6). I can't get my PCP to order the sensivitive test. My TT was only 632 does this mean I need to take something to reduce my E2 if I want my TT /Free T higher?

Sorry johnt I don't mean to derail your thread.

Cialis and zinc, both help to lower E2.

@FeelinLost No problem at all. Your posts are helping me as well. My doc initially did not want to order sensitive as well so I went on my own and had it done through discountedlabs. I think it cost $79. I brought the results with me to my first visit with the doc. You may want to just run on your own.

Reducing your estradiol level, if the sensitive test confirms elevation and symptoms present, is appropriate in and of itself and may - slightly - raise your testosterone. However, boosting your testosterone levels directly is typically accomplished through a delivery change, compounded creams seem to boost levels higher than the commercial topicals that I believe you are using at the present, or a switch to injections.

HCG and testosterone affect an enzyme that clears cortisol from the body. This can cause water retention. Some men seem to be more susceptible to this enzyme inhibition than others. It has absolutely nothing to do with estradiol.

Lowering the dose of HCG may help but may not be enough to maintain fertility or testicular size. I am exploring the use of a drug mentioned in this link.

Water Retention Caused by Testosterone May Have Nothing to Do with Estradiol

Oh my god your situation is exactly like mine right now! I was on a weightloss plan and averaging about 1.5 pounds lost per week. I am counting macros and everything and eating the healthiest foods. I went from a sedentary lifestyle to a very active one for some reason just 3 weeks prior to TRT. I guess it was just psychological motivation that was hoping to get really active haha.

but yes in about 3 weeks i went from 198 to 193. then started TRT....3 weeks later i now weigh 200 pounds? What the heck?? nothing in my diet changed and i have been lifting weights along with cardio at the end of my workouts 5-6 times a week!

Does this water retention go away? is it common for first timers in the beginning stages of TRT? I was doing so well with my diet and exercise prior to TRT :(

PS: Im beginning to feel the energy from TRT which i am loving. But i was expecting to shed some weight. Im getting all my macros in while staying on a caloric deficit based off of my plan. This ensures weightloss. But for some reason its like my body is just storing everything it takes in lol.

If more people can chime in and share their experiences it would be greatly appreciated. This would ease my mind a bit.
