Treating prolactin

Buy Lab Tests Online
My lab results a while back showed elevated prolactin levels.

I'm curious to hear from members that have treated elevated prolactin with Cabergoline. I am curious if any experienced improved TT/FT levels with the addition of cabergoline to their protocol and what effect it may have had on their T dosages.

I switched from twice weekly injections, and currently am on 40 mgs of Test Cyp EOD. I did this to smooth out my mood fluctuations with the hope it would also help reduce E without the need for an AI.

What was your prolactin at the start of therapy? If elevated, were thyroid issues ruled out, along with a determination as to whether an MRI of your pituitary was needed to rule out an adenoma?

Agree with CoastWatcher. Also, do you have the actual test results as "elevated" could be 1 point over the reference range or 50 points over.

Also, think of Cabergoline as something to lower Prolactin only - not something to improve TT/FT levels. If your TT/FT are lower than desired, look into your dosing with your Doc and perhaps raise your dose a bit.

Vince, I've read the post a couple of times and what I come away with is that an MRI is considered the higher the elevation. My medical coverage is through the VA and they don't seem too concerned with my lab results. I'm awaiting the results of their labwork. Their urologist won't see me without theirs.

My prolactin reading was 24. I ordered the test when I first ordered labwork through discounted labs. Until now, I've been relying on my physicians' determinations that things were fine with my values. I've not been given specific numbers aside from my TT, FT, and E throughout treatment.

I was put on therapy to address my low TT and FT back in 2013. Was told thyroid function was fine at the time. My prolactin was not tested. I've been on TRT since but still have no libido and ED.

My current physician upped my dose back in October. I've still got no libido on TT-806, FT-29, E-42. I was told "There's no hormonal reason for it."

I was wondering if those who've had cabergoline added to their protocols were able to lower or maintain dosages as a result. Apart from better workout responsiveness/recovery I'm not feeling improvement in libido. Anxiety about the whole thing is setting in, as I've read 200 mgs a week is the max dosage on TRT. I'd hate to get their and have no improvement.

I guess I'm just searching for a little hope.

OK, lowering Prolactin is a separate issue from raising TT/FT. One does not raise or lower the other in guys on TRT.

High Prolactin can lower libido, but that is typically when your Prolactin is over 50 - not always, but typically. A small dose of Cabergoline easily lowers Prolactin, but like anything else, too low is just as bad as too high.

What is your current Testosterone protocol and schedule? (E.G., 100mg per week, one shot a week, 200mg per week, inject every 3.5 days, etc.)

Please give us as many details as you can (per ERO's request). And getting your hands on lab results, for future reference, is always a good idea. In the United States, your medical records belong to you. It shouldn't be a significant issue.

ERO, I disagree with the part where you said you will only notice a difference in lower libido at Prolactin levels over 50. I am willing to bet 99%+ of men with Prolactin over the range of 20 are experiencing some lower libido/ed problems from mild-severe. Also I have read all over the place that most men do not notice a subtle decline in libido/ed until they have gotten their Prolactin lowered and their "eyes are opened" and realize they did indeed have a problem. I am not sure where you got your information from.

I started out with Prolactin level of 64 and I have gotten it down to 32 on my last test (2 weeks ago) with Cabergoline and I feel no different and still have no benefits in the libido or ed department. The only positive I have gotten so far from lowering my levels is a slightly more intense orgasm. (But getting there still feels like a difficult chore and not a pleasure)

Greenarrow I wish I had more info to give you but this is all I have got from my experience so far. Hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel for both of us. I agree with you that ED medications are better than not using them but are not some magical cure or bandaid for the problem. I don't even remember what it's like to have a normal libido/erectile function and I have TT levels around 900+. Good luck and keep us posted about any progress you make. I am curious because it is hard to find other men who are on TRT with high prolactin and what they have done to fix it or how they feel when they do fix it. Most people get tested for prolactin before going on TRT and I was one of the unlucky ones who did not and I have a feeling it was the cause of my low t in the first place.

https://www.excelmale.com/forum/showthread.php?3868-Cabergoline-Should-I-really-take-it-(pros-vs-cons)&highlight=Prolactin See the third post down by Nelson. I have had the exact same results. My Prolactin has been as high as 25 and as low as 7 and I feel no difference between the two. Now everybody is different, but "high" Prolactin where one should be worried about a tumor is <150.

Let us know if you get yours below 20 and your libido and ED are resolved. I hope that they are.

I agree with some of Nelson's post in the sense that if you have normal prolactin levels and or ED with semi-normal prolactin levels and are just taking Cabergoline or any other medication to lower your already in range prolactin hoping to raise libido and increase erectile function it isn't going to do much for you.

The part where he says "I think" about levels being 50+, and "but I took it with no results" says a lot. (His opinion/personal experience). I am curious to know how high his prolactin was when he took it, how long he took it, and his dosage because those factors change everything obviously. Alot of healthy people try and just take Cabergoline as a recreational drug for sex and most notice no change at all but some do.

You are probably right that prolactin slightly above range most people likely won't notice a night and day difference lowering it.

Thanks, I will for sure let you guys know how I end up. Frustrating is an understatement after being on TRT and not having improvements in those departments lol

Your issues *may* have more to do with your overall TRT protocol. (Using or not using HCG, E2 levels, T dosing frequency) I say *may* because we do not know any details.

It is sad to say, but I don't think we have every seen anyone under VA care for TRT that had a proper TRT protocol. Our service men and women deserve better.

ERO is right - TRT administered by the VA is less than cutting edge...by a long shot. Are you willing to get a second opinion from Defy Medical? You could then present their suggestions to your current doctors.

The VA wouldnt consider TRT for me. I first suggested to them I had a hormone imbalance at 25. They'd already prescribed me Viagra which helped with ED but not libido.

They'd only prescribe a certain amount of pills per month so I had to get more through other means. Popping one every time I thought I might get it got expensive fast, and was less than ideal for a single guy.
They even suggested I see a shrink to ensure I wasn't just "confused".

I gave up on them and jumped on TRT with the first doc that suggested it. When I went in recently with my current labwork to get the prolactin number addressed, I felt like I was gonna blow a gasket when my dr told me, hormonally, everything "still" looks good with regard to the cause of my libido/ED issues.

Damn near a 600 point jump in TT from that 230 test!!
I used to be in and out of that place with some kind of ailment before I got on TRT.
I've been less than impressed with them with regard to this whole thing. They may tell me everything is fine here as well.

But now I'm just venting. My confidence in my current TRT doc is shaky now, and I've lined up the ducks on my end to get going with Defy. Had my remaining labwork needed to get my initial consult with them drawn yesterday morning.

I was just hoping to hear from members that have been treated with Cabergoline for elevated prolactin and the effect it had on their libido.

My dosing protocol is currently 40 mgs Test Cyp EOD. It was 140 mgs split into 70 mg shots, twice weekly. Switched to EOD due to low shbg. Haven't been taking Hcg. No AI. TT-806, FT-29, E-42.

My previous searches of the forums didn't bring up much in the way of members taking Cabergoline with good results, aside from Gene. Was curious if anyone else had good results with it.

Htx, I also wasn't tested for it initially and I didn't know then what I know now. Im curious if it may have been the cause of my initial low T as well.

This may sound corny but it's a little comforting just knowing that the specific issue I'm having with my prolactin is not unique to me.
On the other hand, I don't wish this on anyone and I'll be pulling for ya. I'm right there with you. Frustrating as all hell.

Judging by the responses, I think this may prove to be the contribution I can make to this great forum that I've learned so much from.

Beyond Testosterone Book by Nelson Vergel
That is a good dosing schedule. If your Doc will provide it, adding HCG *may* help your libido. It does wonders for some guys, and nothing (libido-wise) for others. Cabergoline at a small dose, like 0.5mg twice a week will bring your Prolactin down, but it is like E2 in that too high=no libido, too low=no libido.

You can get both here: http://www.safemeds4all.com/ I have used this supplier for years with no issues. However, having a provider like Defy would be best as they are both top TRT experts and can provide what you need.
